Every time I hear "desu" I think that the person speaking has sneezed or something.
It's cute... but... WHAT DOES IT MEAN?!?
It's Japanese. Um...it's the equivalent of saying "what I've said is the case" at the end of a statement. It's practically like Japanese punctuation.

"Desu yo" is much stronger, like "I assure you very much that what I've said is the case, and I'm asserting this in a strong manner because I assume you are not knowledgeable on the subject in question AT ALL!" It's considered a little rude, so I use it all the time.
